Picture Monday, June 30, 2008

Today I am highlighting some pictures from Chris's side of the family. Yesterday was Chris's Aunt June's birthday so I decided that this would be a great time to post some of her family pictures. Aunt June is Chris's father's sister. She currently lives in Moberly, Missouri. So get ready. Here we go!

The picture below is a picture of the old home place in Nevada, Missouri. It looks like it was a crisp winter morning when this was taken.

Below we have a picture of Tom Brannaman. He was Chris's father's grandfather. The next picture is Tom Brannaman's wife. Let's see, that makes her Chris's father's grandmother. Gee it's sure hard to keep family relationships straight.

I love this picture! This is a picture of Aunt June in a goat cart. Look at her hair. She was a cutey in 1926.

This is Aunt Maude. This is Aunt June's aunt. Chris says that is her dad, Henry on her lap.

Aunt June stands with her brother Henry, Chris's dad.

The picture below is Aunt June and her husband, Uncle Doyle. Aunt June is holding Chris's cousin, Gary; and her other cousin, Virginia is standing. She must be holding a favorite doll.

My Meal - $159, The Donkey Story - Priceless

I apologize for the extremely late Saturday morning post. In fact, it is so late I couldn't even make it a Saturday evening post (No relation to the other one). It has to be a Sunday morning post.

I went to the Ryan's Buffet for lunch yesterday. It was part of a Defensive Driving class. I went so that I could get 10% off my insurance. I also went to have a ticket dismissed. The ticket was for $225. I received the ticket because of a difference of opinion I had with a policeman concerning the color of a certain light at a certain intersection on Waco Drive. The policeman won. So did the city, the state, and the driving school. I had to pay $107 court costs just for the privilege of taking Defensive Driving. Then there was $12 for a Certified copy of my driving record from the state. The class cost $40. The buffet was "free."

Looked at another way, the lunch cost $159. That's still better than $225 though.

During the class, the instructor was asking us if any of us had ever experienced anything dangerous happening while driving. A retired school teacher related an incident that happened to her and her husband once. They were driving a lonely country road one evening and were keeping their eyes open for deer that might run across the road. They forgot to look for animals in the middle of the road. There was a donkey. They hit it. The donkey was killed. The car was killed also.

I started giggling softly. I'm sure everyone wondered about me. I couldn't help it. While she was talking about the donkey I started thinking about a rhyme my children would recite when they were small. Here it is

Inky binky bonkey;

Daddy had a donkey.

Donkey died.

Daddy cried.

Inky binky bonkey.

Meet Rory

Meet Rory my new partner in crime. She's not really new, she's two years old. Julie got her two years ago from an animal place in East Texas, but that's another story that I'll let Julie tell sometime.

I know that she looks calm and relaxed in the picture, but she is not always that way. Sometimes she acts like she just got an injection of ultra-caffienated Starbuck's coffee. She darts and runs and jumps and knocks things over. Other times she is sweet and calm and reserved.

She likes to spend the day in the extra room lounging. The only problem is she lounges on of the shelves. In order to get there she has to knock down the Hungry, Hungry Hippos game. Boy is she proud when she gets it down and can stretch out. She also likes to stretch out on the very top shelf. The top shelf where I keep the laptop case. The top shelf where I keep the laptop case in order to keep the cats off of it; except her.

Rory also loves to drink water. The only problem is that she only drinks from the faucet. There are times that she rushes to the bathroom when someone goes in. She will then stand in the sink and look at you until you turn on the water for her. She also has her own ideas on how the bathroom counter should be decorated. If she doesn't want something on the counter she will knock it in the sink. If you try to take it out and return it to the proper place Rory returns and knocks back to the sink.

Now that it's summer and I tend to stay up later I always have a late night companion. Every night around 11:00 PM she'll find her way to my lap. She likes to curl up on my lap as I sit in the recliner watching movies. If I happen to be working on the laptop that's OK; she curls up anyway and I have to work around her.

Yummy For Your Tummy

I spent some time last night watching the Food Channel in HD. Watching food in High Definition just inspires me. So I have decide to share a one of my favorite recipes with you. Are you ready? Go get your apron and goofy little chef's hat and let's get to work.

This lip smacking treat is Kool-Aid Pickles. Take one large jar of dill pickles and drain the brine. Use whole pickles for a better effect. In a separate container mix up your Kool-Aid mixture using 1 cup of sugar, 2 cups of water, and 2 packets of Kool-Aid. Cherry gives a nice red color but you can use any flavor you want. Experiment with flavors and colors. If using whole pickles you might want to pierce the pickles with a fork then return them to the jar. Then pour your Kool-Aid mixture in the jar and fill to the top, seal, and refrigerate. Wait a few days and enjoy. Yum-Yum!!! If you wanted, I suppose you could substitute Splenda for the sugar and that way you would have sugar-free pickles.

Picture Monday, June 23, 2008

Whenever I go through the pictures in the comfort of my La-Z-Boy, I always come across a picture and I think, "Why did we take a picture of THAT?" So I collected a few to show off today. Maybe you can figure out why we took a picture of that.

A lamp. Obvious enough. But why? I took that picture in high school. I guess I fancied myself a budding prize photographer. But a lamp? Why?

The picture below isn't much better.

A dandelion.

In black and white.

I still remember taking this picture and several others. I had my camera and I walked around the neighborhood taking pictures of as many different colorful things I could find. I was really excited about them until I had the pictures developed. I had used black and white film. I imagine that explains the lamp picture above.

I'm sorry, but this one defies logic. Why would you want a picture of your cat in the litter box? So far no one has owned up to this one.

Then there's the microwave. For posterity we have a picture of something be warmed up in the microwave. Years from now we will be able to show our children's children's children that we used to cook the old fashioned way, in a microwave.

Finally, a picture of Sam Houston, great Texian of yore. Former president of the Republic of Texas. Sam Houston was a famous head of state who apparently had no head of his own. Yes, we have a picture of famous statue of Sam Houston in Huntsville, TX. The statue has a head. the picture does not.

What Is It About Today?

What is it about today?

Well on this day a lot of interesting people were born. For instance, this date in 1903 brought into the world Carl Hubbell, former pitcher for the NY Giants; and John Dillinger. Both men were wanted in their time but for vastly different reasons. This was not a very good for Hollywood though. On this date in various years the world lost many fine performers. A few of those lost were David O Selznick in 1965, Judy Garland in 1969, Fred Astaire in 1987, and one year later, Dennis Day.

That's not all that happened. In 1342 Bilbo Baggins returned to his home at Bag End. In 1808 Zebulon Pike reached his peak, and "NO" it wasn't named Pike's Peak yet. And history tells us that in 1847 the doughnut was created. I'll bet that was good news for the folks at Krispy Kreme.

And for our friends worldwide the day has special significance also. In the Congo, today is Army Day. Go Army! And in El Salvador, it's School Teacher's Day/D¡a del Maestro. Go Teachers! And in Yemen PDR it is Corrective Move Day. Uhhhh! I'm not quite sure about what that is. Maybe it is a national holiday where everyone takes Carter's Little Pills. Just a guess.
