Picture Monday, September 15, 2008

I had been taking pictures with my cell phone at the previous two Baylor games. The picture stunk. This past Friday I took the old camera with me to the Baylor football game. I snapped several pictures. Here are a few that I like from the night.
This is the scoreboard. DUH!!
The field some time before kickoff. Also sometime before many fans came. Kick-off was at 7:30 PM. This was about 6:15 PM.
It was Friday night. This is a light. I suppose you could say this is one of the Friday night lights.
This is the bottom of the light standard looking down from the top of the stadium.
Baylor punting on 4th down. I caught the ball prior to the punt.
Scoreboard at the end of the game. Baylor defeated Washington State, 45-17.

I Don't Like Ike!

I don't particularly like Ike at this moment in time.

Ike has caused my brother and his family to board up their house. They are riding out the storm. I pray that they are safe and no great damage or danger shall befall them.

I also don't like Ike because he is driving up gas prices in this area. Last weekend I paid $3.40 a gallon for gas at Murphy Oil/Wal-Mart. Yesterday I put half a tank in the truck and paid $3.50 a gallon at the same station. On my way to work this morning (6:30 AM) I saw prices at $3.75 a gallon at both Pilot and the Flying J. On my way home this afternoon at 4:00 PM both stations were sitting at $3.95 a gallon. I decided to pull in to a Shell station and fill up that was selling gas at $3.63. A little higher than I would have liked but certainly better that $3.95. This turned out to be a wise decision. On my home from the Baylor football game (11:30 PM) I discovered that the Pilot station was selling at $4.19 a gallon and the Flying J was at $4.35 a gallon.

There is some good news though. Baylor was scheduled to play Washington State University here in Waco at 11:30 AM on Saturday the 13th. Because of Ike the game was moved up to Friday night with kick-off at 7:30 PM. Baylor won the game, beating Washington State 45-17. Way to go Bears and congratulations to Robert Griffin, tonight's MVP.

On Track with Baylor Football

Had a great Saturday night.

I took my son, Scott, to the Baylor football game last night. Baylor played Northwestern State University. The outcome was decidedly different from Baylor's encounter with Wake Forest on Thursday night, August 28. Baylor played the Demon Deacons on that warm Thursday night in August and were soundly trounced in Coach Art Briles debut.Last night, Baylor soundly trounced the Demons from NSU. Looks like the Bears are 1-1 against the Demons.

Let's hope there no other "demons" lurking about and Baylor will be on their way to a successful season.

Oh, Baylor lost to Wake Forest 41-13 and then turned around and walloped NSU 51-6. Next week, Washington State in Waco. Kick-off is at 11:30 AM Central and will be broadcast on FSN-TV. See you there.

Double Duty Knee Surgery

I wrote a couple of days ago about my memories of Hillcrest Hospital. Not only have I had memories of living by the hospital, but I also have had my own experiences with the care from Hillcrest.

You see, when I was going to Baylor University I had to have arthroscopic knee surgery. The surgery was at Hillcrest Hospital in 1978. I hurt my right knee playing football when I was in junior high. When I was in the 7th grade I played each play of each game on the offensive and defensive line until the last game of the season. In the last quarter of the game I was illegally blocked and tore the cartilage in my right knee. I sat out the rest of the game and didn't get to play much in the 8th grade due to knee problems. By the 9th grade I acted as football manager. For whatever reasons I lived with the knee problems and it eventually seemed to get better.

Actually, what happened is I began to favor my right leg and place more pressure on the left leg. Also, whenever I stood I was place most of my weight on the left leg. This eventually led to even more problems.

When I finally visited my orthopaedic surgeon he told me that I had torn cartilage in the right knee and an extremely bad left knee. You see, all the years of pressure on the left knee caused it the cartilage to wear thin and in some spots the bone began to rub against bone. Ouch!

I went to Hillcrest during the summer and had the surgery on both knees at the same time. OUCH!

I was special. I had one surgeon on the right knee and another surgeon doing the left knee. That was on a Monday morning. By Tuesday morning they were getting me into rehab. Unfortunately, my knees and stomach had different plans. They did get me up there that afternoon. By then I was better. I then got to enjoy the run of the hospital in my wheelchair. By Thursday, I had to learn to get around on crutches. Fun, fun, fun. On Friday I was on my way home and had to learn how to cope with stairs and other obstacles. By the time summer was over I was ready for Baylor and getting around campus on better knees.

Was the surgery worth it? Sure. But now that it has been 30 years since the surgery the old knees hurt now and again and are a little creaky, but are still much better than that summer Monday morning at Hillcrest Hospital before the surgery began.

Talk About Planning Ahead

I was looking at Monday's Waco Tribune-Herald. They had an article in the Sports section about the upcoming series of football games between Baylor and Notre Dame. I have known for some time that colleges plan far in advance for some of their series; especially non-conference contests. But I think the planning for this series of games is a little too far in advance. Look at the date that the paper published; October 6, 20012. I don't imagine I'll go to that game.
