Wednesday Night TV: UNIVAC Computer Commercials (1956 in 3D)

Today we have 2 commercials from 1956. Both are for Remington Rand UNIVAC Computers. The 1st commercial is 27 seconds long. This commercial aired on the CBS Television Network on 5 February 1956. Immediately after the 1st commercial is finished playing, the second will play. It is approximately 3 minutes long and was aired during the 5 February 1956 CBS-TV telecast of "What's My Line?" This last commercial promotes the CBS-TV weather services.

It is interesting to note that these commercials were not originally broadcast in 3D. The 3D effects were added later, as a sort of after market effect if you will. This 3D effect is the old type (Anaglyph image) requiring the red and blue glasses (Red on the left, Blue on the right). I pulled out an old pair of mine and the effects seem to work OK, but I am not sure why you would want to watch a 1956 computer commercial in 3D.

If you like this I can post some more in 3D. All using the Anaglyph image process. By the way, you might be interested in knowing that the Anaglyph image process has been around since 1853. That's right, 1853. Came out of Germany. Who knew his development would have figured so prominently in 1950's Hollywood and beyond?

I'm Ba-a-a-ck!!

Well if you're still with me I want to apologize for the unintentional hiatus that I took over the weekend. It seems that the "perfect storm" of events took place this weekend and kept the blog from carrying forward.

There were several reasons for this happening.

First, I just got tired of my computer anti-virus just working half-way, and my mal-ware scanners just working half-way. So I decided I would devote my time to solving it. This meant running scans until they froze and determining what caused them to freeze or hang. Then I had to either isolate, solve, or remove the problem file, agent, Trojan. etc. as the case may have been. Long story short, this involved countless scans that ran into two days and various procedures to correct them but it was successful and all scans run beautifully and now they report a clean machine.

Second, school days are approaching. that meant we had to look for school supplies for our grandson Jace. That's not any fun when everyone else is doing the same thing and it's 105 degrees outside, the truck is hot and then you go into the stores and they're hot also. Add to that, we could not find all the supplies at one place. AAARGH!!

Third and final reason, I was just plain tired. Messing with the computer and hunting for school supplies will just do it to you!

As if that were not enough, About the time I finally finished fixing the computer Sunday night, a freak summer thunderstorm moved into the area. Along with it there was a lot of lightning and strong gusty winds. Apparently, the winds blew a limb or something across the lines and we lost our cable, phones, and Internet. I couldn't' log on to post so I went to bed.

Once again, thanks for hanging in and we're back on line for ya.

Mixed Bag Today

Well, yesterday was a mixed bag. We got the Kindergarten Texas Primary Reading Inventory End of Year (TPRI EOY)scores today. The results showed a lot of growth and all at the school were much relieved. That was the good portion of the mixed bag.

Now the bad portion. Started to install a new hard drive last night. Much more difficult than you would think. Spent much time transferring data from the old drive to an external drive so that I have the files and can go through them at my leisure. Then had to try to get the old drive to boot in order to run data tools as an extra safeguard. I was planning to reinstall Windows XP as a clean install on the drive. This way I wouldn't have all the "junk" that comes with a new computer. Buttttt, I couldn't get the disk to boot on the new drive. Now I'm stumped because I've tried every combination of drive settings, etc. that I can think of.

Update tomorrow.

BLACK TUESDAY

I woke up yesterday morning to every computer owners nightmare; or least my nightmare.
Something happened in the dead of the night. When I went to sleep my computer and I were in 2008. I woke up yesterday morning still in 2008. My computer didn't. It thought it was in 2003. In fact it thought it had just been taken out of the box. That's right. It wanted to take me by the hand and guide me down the path. I wasn't ready to deal with it so I got ready for work and left it secretly hoping it would come to it's senses and come back to the present.
I got home after work and decided to check the computer. It was still in 2003. Man that's bad. It doesn't recognize the keyboard. I had to drag the old keyboard and mouse out and reattach them before I could do anything. Gack!!! The screen, the drivers, everything.....all screwed up. It wanted to install things and do things that it shouldn't be doing. Most of my programs, KaBlooey!
I guess the hard drive reformatted, sooooo----Hard Drive City, here I come.
I am able to blog though. If things look a little different or blogs are a little late it's because of the current computer situation. Bear with me and I will endeavor to work through it.

Take 'er Apart And See What Makes 'er Tick

When I was a little boy the toys I had were simple and relatively inexpensive compared with toys today. When my kids were younger (20 years ago) their toys were relatively inexpensive compared with toys today.

Toys today are like expensive, especially when your toy is a computer and you like to take your toys apart. I did just that not quite a month ago. Refer back my post from February 26. I mentioned briefly my experience with dismantling an external hard drive. Apparently this runs in the family.

My daughter Julie (22 years old) brought something to me last night. "Hey Dad," she said; "Look what I took out of my laptop!" She shows me a wad of dust. Then she tells me that it's all over the inside of her laptop. Then she asks if I have any canned air.

I tell her, "No, I used it all when I took my computer apart last week to get rid of all the dust and hair." Then I tell her, "That stuff is expensive, just blow on it!"

Later, Julie comes in the bedroom and tells her Mother that she put her laptop back together and she had lots of screws leftover. Chris told her that maybe her Dad or brother would like to take it apart and try to find where they go.

"No thanks," she said. "It still works; except the screen!"

It turns out that a couple of nights ago one of her cats knocked the laptop off the night table. The tumble to the floor broke the screen off. Julie had taken it apart to she if she could get the screen to work again. No such luck.

Apple Ipod, look out. Here comes Julie.
