Sunday Movie Time: Detour (1945)

I found this movie over at the Internet Archive. This is what they have to say about today's movie: In a classic poverty-row noir, the protagonist struggles helplessly in the grip of inexorable fate. Currently rated 7.4 at the IMDB.

This was the first poverty-row film chosen by the Library of Congress for its National Film Registry, in 1992. Don't miss it.

The copy you find here is sharper than the two that have already been uploaded. And the mpeg2 file contains nav packets, so you can load it into DVDAuthorGUI (a free program) and quickly create a DVD to watch on your television.

This movie may take a while to load depending upon your internet connection. Please be patient. I think you will be rewarded with a good movie. The movie was released in 1945 and is 1 hour 8 minutes in length.

Welcome Back To Me

Well, here I am after a 2 year absence. I can't really say why I was gone other than it seemed appropriate to take a break from everything. One thing lead to another and.....well,I'll try.

Originally I decided to take a short break for the beginning of the summer, after all I had just finished up another school year. Then things went south from there. There were many things that demanded my attention so I gave them my attention. By the end of the summer I had to prepare for a new school year. Had to leave the blog on the back burner. The school year began and well.....things seemed to go further south. Suffice it to say that it was not a stellar year, but I survived.

Along came last summer and I still had not returned to blog. I suppose other things demanded my time, or at least worked their way into it. Then, in the middle of a carefree summer; horrors, my computer bit the dust. Took awhile to get a replacement and the laptop was just to finicky to deal with. Summer turned into fall and a new computer. I was well into a new school year and things began to get much better at school, but by that time I had discovered Facebook. Yes, Facebook demanded a lot of my time. It seems that the games were a lot more fun. So I spent another year without the blog, but with a lot of Facebook.

The school year ended on a sad note (the death of a co-workers son and the still undecided fate of education funding in the State of Texas). By now I had decided that, for whatever reasons, it would be a good time to return to the blog.

So, here I am. I will try to continue my installments on my Notgeld collection. I will also be sharing assorted videos that I like and the occasional drivel that come up with or happen to find laying about.

Picture Monday, May 25, 2009: Notgeld #22

This week I take you to Tiefurt, Thuringia, Germany for an issue of Emergency Notgeld. This week I have 4 specimens; 1 - 25 Pfennig, 2 - 50 Pfennig, and 1 - 75 Pfennig examples. Each note has the profile of Duchess Anna Amalia on the obverse of each note. The reverse of each note has a famous landmark in the area. I hope you enjoy them.

Memorial Day 2009

On this day we honor those men and women who have valiantly placed their lives in harms way in order for all Americans to live and enjoy the freedoms granted us by our creator. We also thank the families and loved ones of those brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in this endeavor. These men and women have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom around the world. For this sacrifice a grateful nation thanks them and their families!

Picture Monday, May 18, 2009; Notgeld #21

This week I have Notgeld from Bad Lauterberg in Harz. I think these specimens are particularly pretty. Each one is designated "Gutschein" or "Voucher" in the lower left hand corner of the obverse of each specimen. The first four have an obverse centered on the town Coat of Arms and a relatively colorful reverse. The final note is an interesting example which has the 300 Pfennig denomination. I have not seen many of that particular amount. Who knows though. I may see more by the time I complete this endeavor in a couple of years.

5th Grade Rocks

I can't say enough about my 5th Grade helper's.

Over the past few weeks they have visited my classroom and have proved to be a great help. One especially trying day Ms. Steele sent several of her students down to work with my students. As it turned out, on that particular day the computer lab was shut down about the time that my class would have gone. I was able to take the 5th grade helpers and pair them with my students. The 5th grade helpers read to them and/or assisted them on the computers. My students have been on the computers enough to log in on their own, but they still need help when a program freezes or unexpectedly shuts down. It must be a hiccup in Java or some other wonder of the technology age. Thanks go out to Jonathan the assistant, Lorenzo, Mary Alice, Karina, Kathya, Raquel, Orabelle, and the others who came to help me out on that day.

On Monday, May4 our class went on a field trip to the zoo. Ms. Steele said if she had known that we were going on that day she could have tried to get their trip to the zoo on the same day. The kindergarten would have really enjoyed going with the 5th grade. They really like it when the bigger kids come down to work with them.

On Friday, some of the 5th graders came to my class to help out again. They assembled some more readers for the class to use. Later they helped out in math. We were doing a data collection activity where we counted the number of times a student could hop on one leg. Mary Alice was especially helpful during this activity. By the way, Mary Alice jumped 350 times on one leg. Kathya recorded Mary Alice as she "smoked" Karina who jumped 288 times.

Later, Mary Alice, Karina, and Kathya helped my students with centers and handwriting before they called it a day and headed back to their class.

On Tuesday of last week Ms. Steele invited me to watch her class as they made their baking soda and vinegar "volcanoes". I went outside with them during my lunch time and they were having a great time. Unfortunately, they were having technical difficulties and the "volcanoes" did not work. They postponed them until Wednesday or Thursday. On the day that they did the "volcanoes" again they worked great. They also inflated some balloons using the trued and true vinegar and baking soda method. Afterwards, we went to my classroom and I did the famous "Instant Snow" experiment. Instant Snow is really sodium polyacrylate, a polymer used for various purposes from diapers to magic tricks. Mary Alice and Jonathon especially like the "snow".

Next week I plan on I plan on letting 5th grade add some hooks to some molecules and see what happens. Maybe we can make some polymer of some sort.
